The check engine light went away. Now at K Miles I have the P code back. I took it back a few days later to the shop to have them inspect the weld on the flex pipe because it runs a slightly louder than before. They said everything checked out. I'm wondering if the flex pipe replacement could have any thing to do with the code coming back. Can someone help me trouble shoot this? I know there are several possible causes and I don't want to just replace parts, I'd like to find root cause.
Thanks in advance for any insight. Reelin68 answered 4 years ago. A bad O2 sensor will trigger the code as well.Toyota liva wiring diagram diagram base website wiring diagram
I would suspect that the one on the upstream side is bad. If you want to pay to have them check the sensors with a scope, that's an option. You will still be stuck paying for labor. The unfortunate part is, you can't figure out what's bad until you replace it. Unless you pay for the tests. The fact that the engine sounds "louder" than usual tells me you need a second opinion and a full inspection of the exhaust system on this vehicle.Mhanno preso! Also, it would be nice to hook up a scan tool which is capable of displaying "Live Data" such as O2 sensor function. I would be inclined to clear this code This diagnostic procedure should lead one to conclude the root cause for this issue. Davidrmort answered 4 years ago.
I did reset the code and it came back on within the first 25 miles. Sounds like a plan. If they decide to road test this vehicle, you might suggest they take the scan tool with them which will allow them to collect DATA when the event occurs. Car now had slight burning smell, added coolant eve Recent replacement of timing belt and water pump atmiles. Prior to this, the engine ran good with no unusual noises. Checked several times for correct placement of the belt with timing marks Car failed to start 3 days ago, tapped the starter and was able to get it to start up wasn't a smooth start, but still started.

Posted and Edit by AutoCodes.A Acura TL with oxygen sensor extenders, essentially faking out the PCM into believing the catalytic converter is efficient Simply add oxygen sensor extenders, tricking the post-catalytic converter oxygen sensor into believing the air it is sensing is cleaner than it really is.
So, a P has nothing to do with the cat and everything to do with what the post-cat oxygen sensor thinks is happening. Obviously, a rear O2 that is in a vehicle that abides by federal and state regulations will only be affected by the catalytic converter or exhaust leaks. The PCM simply presumes that the rear O2 sensor data is sufficient in determining how efficient the cat itself really is.
Whether the vehicle you are dealing with is a Toyota or any other manufacturer, the way you approach diagnosing a Ps is exactly the same after you plug in your scan tool.

Burn-off procedures. I have never, ever seen a fuel system cleaning or burn-off procedure resurrect a catalytic converter on a vehicle other than a Toyota. Not so coincidently, Toyota is the only manufacturer that I am aware of that recommends this as a P repair.
NOTE: I have killed two catalytic converters by doing a simple fuel system cleaning as preventative maintenance. Both vehicles had over 70, miles without having ever had a fuel system maintenance service, and I believe large pieces of carbon and high temperatures trashed the catalytic converters.
Granted, one vehicle was a Nissan and the other a Subaru But, be careful overselling fuel system cleanings or you will actually be doing your customer a disservice. The software in the PCM does. So, in a way the PCM is the referee that discerns whether the catalytic converter is off-sides or not. Now, I know for a fact that there are certain cars that even with the whole substrate punched out of the cat, they will never throw a P!
The software in the PCM is looking the other way. I believe that the manufacturers make software updates that make the referee look the other way when it comes to a catalytic converter failing to do its job. So, how does this information help us?
